The APDs and TECs of the NOvA Near detector are cooled by TEC / water cooling, and dried by a dry gas system. APDs may become damaged without continuous water cooling and drying if the TEC’s are actively cooling. The APD and TECC firmware have their own protection for high temperature and over current if water cooling is lost, but nothing for dryness. The water cooling and dry gas process systems have interlocks as well, which can disable TEC cooling to the entire detector by interrupting power to the 2 Low voltage and 1 High voltage racks. Information on the Rack interlock system for the far detector system can be found in NOvA Doc-6503 and Doc-9055. The Near detector is identical, except instead of using a 24V output and resistor from the process PLC, the interlock relays are driven directly by a 5V output.
