NOvA, or NuMI Off-Axis v_e Appearance experiment,
is a long baseline neutrino experiment using
an off-axis beam produced by the main injector
(NuMI) neutrino beamline at Fermilab. The
experiment consists of three main components:
an upgrade to the NuMI beamline, a 14 kton
far detector located 810 km from the Fermilab
site and a 220 ton near detector located
on site. Both detectors are 14 mr off-axis.
The goals of the NOvA experiment include
a measurement of n_mu to nu_e oscillation,
a determination of the mass hierarchy via
the MSW effect, a measurement of the CP-violating
phase, delta_CP and a precise measurement
of theta_23 . Recently, a prototype near
detector (NDOS) has been completed and has
been used to observe neutrinos from the NuMI
and booster neutrino beams. We report the
current status of the project, present the
expected neutrino physics sensitivities and
discuss the first data collected using the
