Abstract:
This is the final report of Elise Chavez, Fermilab 2019 SIST summer intern:
The interest in neutrino physics has grown over the years as neutrinos are believed to hold
answers to many pressing questions in physics. With this, a need has arisen to bring the neutrino
experiments into the modern day in terms of software. NOvA currently uses a geant4 hadron
production model for the NuMI beam simulation and external data (NA49) for its beam prediction.
The ability to update the Geant4 models that are constantly improving is hindered by a lack of automation.
The main motivation for this project was to automate such a process to allow NOvA an easier way to
update hadronic models and GEANT4 versions for the beamline simulation. A further motivation
was to actually compare the QGSP BERT and FTFP BERT hadronic models in the current NOvA
beam configuration. In addition, it was desired to produce an environment like that of the upcoming
DUNE experiment. This would allow DUNE to mimic the process described in this paper. This
can currently be done for hadronic models and will be possible in the future for GEANT4 versions.
The results of this project have shown that NOvA’s use of FTFP is justified and has shown that for
their version of GEANT4 FTFP is more correctly modeling the hadronic cross sections. Overall, this
project demonstrates the need for further investigation into hadronic cross sections and how nature
decides which hadrons to produce in a collision.
